Grierson's Linguistic Survey of India

A database of G.A. Grierson's Linguistic Survey of India (1904～1928, Calcutta).

All the proper names, as well as general terms are fully searchable by regular expressions.
Highlighted texts are also searchable.

Results are shown by pdf images taken from the Grierson's own private copy of the 1st edition (currently in possession of the GICAS project)

Mission complete. All the volumes (vols 1-1, 1-2, 1-sup2, 2, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 4, 5-1, 5-2, 6, 7, 8-1, 8-2, 9-1, 9-2, 9-3, 9-4, 10, 11) have been comprised into the database.

We will continue to proof-read and ameliorate this database. Suggestions are quite welcome. Thank you for your cooperation. (Feb, 17th, 2010)

how to search

1. "Proper terms" to search proper names, as well as language/dialect names, "General terms" to search anything (but slower)

2. use spaces for logical "AND", vertical bars (|) for logical "OR"
   e.g.

   telugu △ tamil	→	telugu AND tamil
   telugu | tamil	→	telugu OR tamil
   marathi | konkani △ canarim	→	marathi OR (konkani AND canarim ) [ AND is stronger than OR ]
   (marathi | konkani) △ canarim	→	(marathi OR konkani) AND canarim [ use parentheses to change ]

3. regular expressions accepted
   e.g.

   ka[rn]+a[td]a

   →

   search for "karata", "kannata", "kannada", "karnada", ... etc.
